photolithography
A technique applied broadly in the semi-conductor industry that uses a mask to selectively expose light to a silicon wafer. At Affymetrix, GeneChip® arrays are manufactured by a proprietary, light-directed chemical synthesis process, which combines solid-phase chemical synthesis with photolithographic fabrication techniques.
